Artist Statement
큰 왕자 시리즈 - 차형록

어린 시절 대부분의 사람들이 권장도서 목록에 포함된 생텍쥐베리의 ‘어린 왕자’를 읽어보았음이 분명하다. 그래서 누구에게나 익숙한 철없는 어린 왕자는 홀로 외로운 삶을 B-612라고 지구인들이 이름 지은 곳에 살다가, 어디선가 문득 날아와 꽃이 핀 장미의 불평듣기가 지겨워 지자 훅하고 날아가는 별동별을 채어 이곳 저곳을 여행하며 다른 행성의 사람들도 만나고 그러다가 하루는 지구에 떨어진다.

나의 그림 이야기 속에서는 공교롭게도 어린 왕자가 사하라 사막이 아닌 미국 땅에 떨어지게 된다. 그래서 바보밥나무가 더 크게 자라기 전에 잘라주는 것과 분화구가 막히기 전에 청소하는 것 밖에 모르던 순수한 어린 왕자는 길에서 만난 여우가 오천송이의 장미 밭 대신 안내해 준 마리화나 밭으로 가게 된다.

지구에서 이곳 저곳을 여행하며 점점 어른이 되어가는 어린왕자를 상상하여 그려본다

“The Little Prince” by Saint Exupery is common enough that everyone might have read it once in their youth. This familiar young boy lives alone in his planet so called B-612 by the Earth people. One day, a seed arrives on his planet and it grows up to be a narcissist rose. Being fed up with the rose’s complaints, he catches a shooting star and travels to many different planets. Then eventually he falls into the Earth.

Unfortunately, in my story, the Little Prince arrives in California instead of the Sahara Desert. The innocent boy who knew nothing but trimming the baobab trees before they grow too big and cleaning the little volcanoes before they erupt meets a fox which leads him to a marijuana farm instead of a garden that is filled with five thousand roses as it is in the book.

The Little Prince travels to many places on the Earth and he grows up in my imagination.
