Àå¼®ÁØÀº Á¾·Î 3°¡ µÞ°ñ¸ñÀÇ ¹ãÀ» ¼ö³õ´Â Æ÷À帶Â÷µéÀÇ ÁÖÈ« dz°æ°ú ¸ðÅÚ ÁÖÂ÷Àå Ä¿¹ö ¸ðÀ½, 1È£¼± ÁöÇÏöÀ» Ÿ°í °¡¸é¼ ¼öÁýÇÑ ÁöÇÏö â ¹ÛÀÇ Ç³°æ µîÀ» ¼±º¸ÀδÙ. ¸®±ÝÈ«Àº Áß±¹ °ü±¤°´µé°ú °ü·ÃµÈ ÇÁ·ÎÁ§Æ®(2011)¸¦ ¼Ò°³ÇÑ´Ù. ÀÌ µÎ ÀÛ°¡°¡ ¼öÁýÇÑ ¼¿ïÀÇ ´Ù¾çÇÑ ¸é¸éµéÀº ÀÛ°¡ °³ÀÎÀÇ ±â¾ïÀ̸é¼, µ¿½Ã´ë¸¦ »ì¾Æ°¡´Â ¿ì¸®µéÀÌ ÃæºÐÈ÷ °ø°¨ÇÒ¼ö ÀÖ´Â ±â¾ïÀÌÀÚ ±â·ÏÀÏ °ÍÀÌ´Ù.
We humans make cities, and they consistently give rise to a unique culture. The traces engendered in this way are scattered all over a city, and artists dwelling in a modern city take the motifs for their work from such traces. They have concern for growing urban scenes and things, or persistently document urban redevelopment and urban traces disappearing after use. They also go around here and there in the city and work with objects with individual meaning.
Jang Suk Joon and Lee Geum Hong who formed a subjective memory and history of Seoul through their ¡®collecting¡¯, are invited to "Urban
Archive@Seoul", the fourth exhibition addressing the theme of the city (Seoul).
Jang Suk Joon captures products derived from an industrialized city, walking around the city. The artist takes photographs of a city¡¯s suburban areas alienated from urbanization, obscure back alleys, old shopping districts, and small factories, gathering these partial elements one by one into his computer. With images he collects, Jang creates a unique scene through a repetitive arrangement of images of the same kind.
In this way he brings forth a new landscape with scenes such as covered snack stalls in orange in the back alleys of Jongno 3-ga at night; stonewalls in an old village; blue shutters in parking lots and a shopping district; and vinyl fences of motel parking lots. As with our routines, these scenes are repetitively arranged, structuring a distinctive beauty. The images Jang has collected out of his individual interest reflect typical social aspects, and remain as another memory, imbued with the stories and memories of those living in the city.
While Jang deals with a city¡¯s external scenes, Lee Geum Hong takes notice of trifling daily aspects of urban life. Lee has mainly worked on generating narratives of a specific place and shaping temporal, sensuous, and cultural layers with her imagination, paying attention to stories and things people feel as trivial, less attentively. Lee visited Yantai, China, to learn recipes for jajangmyeon so familiar to us and Uygur, Xinjiang, China, to study the food and language of Korean Chinese people residing in Garibong-dong, Seoul. In the Old House Restoration Project (2011) Lee creates someone¡¯s imaginary personal history and collects and displays things they probably used in an old house, formed like a memorial hall. In 2012 she called at a senior citizen¡¯s center in Changdong,
Seoul and collected aged women¡¯s names and stories. Lee engraved them and displayed them as a seal engraving. Lee made a booklet titled Lady¡¯s Narrative Poem-Engraving Names using the material of aged women¡¯s past, present life, and future hopes, naturally collected.
Artworks to be displayed have been chosen in consideration of the exhibit venue in Seoul 53 Hotel located in Iksun-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul.
Jang Suk Joon displays orange scenes of snack carts in the back alleys of Jongno 3-ga, the vinyl curtains of motel parking lots, and scenes seen from a subway train on Line No. 1 in Seoul.
Lee Geum Hong introduces a project (2011) related to Chinese tourists in Seoul. The project features the souvenir shop of Yeonhee-dong, Seoul open for Chinese tourists only during meal times. The eight postcards and souvenirs tourists often purchase as special things of Korea are exhibited alongside the video showing a performance in which the artist performed as a shopping guide at the shop, wearing Hanbok.
A variety of aspects of Seoul the two artists have collected are memories and records we can fully sympathize with, even though they derive from individual memories.
